Top Acne Treatments – Which Ones Have You Tried?

Posted by nisbinfo | Healthy Living | Thursday 26 March 2009 9:56 am

Looking for top acne treatments? There is no such thing as the perfect treatment for everyone. Different treatments work differently for different people. The fact that there are too many products claiming to fight acne only makes it harder to make your pick. The operative word here is harder, not impossible, because not only is it possible to find a product you can be happy with for a long time, the selection process gets easier over time!

In a nutshell, top acne treatments work in any or all of these ways: reduce oil production, speed up skin cell turnover, reduce inflammation, fight bacteria or do all four.

Topically, your best bet come in the form of creams and lotions with tretinoin and adapalene. Over-the-counter creams and lotions containing resorcinol, lactic acid, salicylic acid, sulfur, or benzoyl peroxide are also equally effective. Lotions dry up excess oil, kill P. acnes, and help slough off dead skin cells faster. Creams, on the other hand, accelerate skin cell turnover and prevent the clogging of hair follicles, which in turn leads to formation of pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.

For very stubborn zits, you may opt for antibiotics instead. Prescription antibiotics fight inflammation and reduce bacteria growth exponentially. Often, you will have to take them for months, or use them alongside creams and lotions.

Now, you normally would not think of oral contraceptive as anti-acne. However, studies have shown that women who try a combination of ethinyl estradiol (think Ortho Tri-Cyclen and Ortho-Cyclen) and norgestimate suffer breakouts less and less. Do not try these contraceptives without first discussing it with your doctor, though. They cause side effects that may do you more harm than good, in the long run.

Finally, isotretinoin, light and laser therapies, and cosmetic procedures like microdermabrasion and chemical peels are also being touted as top acne treatments. On the upside, they work faster, with more dramatic results. The downside is that they cost more, and usually require multiple sessions.

Have you tried any of these options? How did it work for you? Would you recommend that others try it, too?

Posted by nisbinfo | Healthy Living | Thursday 19 March 2009 9:56 am

Calories counting is probably the best way to start your weight loss. This quick article will give you some starters on how to start losing weight by calories counting. If you are serious about losing weight then I would suggest that you keep a food journal to keep track of daily intake.

Food journal

Logging your food consumption is very important if you want get a truthful insight into your eating habits. Start off simple by just using a notepad to track your food consumption. Keeping track gives you a way of finding where your bad habits lie so you can work on getting rid of them e.g. I always have a chocolate as an afternoon snack. You don’t need to over complicate things. Get a notepad and make a simple table that can log what you ate, what time you ate it and how many calories it had. It’s as simple as that.

Calorie counter

To find caloric value of food you should use calorie counters, there are free ones on the net and you can also buy a printed version. There are a few websites that even have meal planning tools.

Some foods like vegetables, meats and fruit may not have the calorie information on them so in these cases the calorie counter comes in handy. A lot of popular restaurant will have calorie info on their menu on their websites, check it out and use it to keep track of what you eat when you go out. Remember that all foods have energy and if you eat too much of it it is likely to end up as fat on your body. You want to try and eat healthy foods but remember that even healthy foods like nuts are very high in calories so keep track of how much you eat. Try to avoid consuming calories via beverages like sodas and coffees. If you must drink soda then have the occasional diet soda.

Eating out

Restaurants are changing their menus to cater for the health aware customers who want low calorie tasty foods, take advantage of this. Even junk foods places like McDonald’s sell salads and fruit so even if you’re dragged there when you’re with friends you have some options.

Low calorie snacks

When buying snacks get the ones that are packed into small 100 to 200 calorie portions. This way you know what to take and there is less chance of you accidentally eating too much. If you need to, prepare your own portions into some sandwich bags or Tupperware and have enough ready to last a few days. Be careful that you don’t get tempted into grabbing a few bags and gorging on them. Treat cookies, cakes and chips as treats and only have 1 or 2 portions a day max.

Gorging

Some people think it’s OK to save your calories and then binge on a 1500 calorie fast food meal at the end of the day. First of all, you won’t get all the nutrients you need and secondly, consuming that many calories at once will cause an insulin spike resulting in a lot of that meal being stored as fat because the body never needs that much food at once. Eat foods that have a high quantity of nutrients in them like vegetables and fish. Try to eat as much natural foods as possible and you’ll find that you end up eating a lot of low calorie, high nutrient content foods.

Logging your food intake is a simple but effective way to see what you eat and start losing weight. By logging you food intake you can watch what good and bad habits you have when it comes to food, you can also start seeing patterns E.g. I lost more weight last week when I was eating more vegetables and less snacks.

History of Homeopathy

Posted by nisbinfo | Healthy Living | Thursday 12 March 2009 9:56 am

Doctor Samuel Hahnemann was a German scholar and physician. He was born in 1755 and died in 1843. He is the Father of Homeopathic Medicine. He was not happy of the methods and treatment of the medical practices of his time.

He was against the medical practices of the day by using methods like bloodletting, vomiting and the use of toxic chemicals. As a result of his unhappiness, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann gave up his medical practice.

Personal Research & Experiments

He wished to gather a good knowledge of homeopathy treatment and the relative effects of such treatment. He spent a good number of hours and time in translating medical texts. He took keen interest in the works of William Cullen’s “Materia Medica”, and translated the text into the German language.

In the course of his studies and experiments, Hahnemann was impressed with the properties and curing propensities of quinine containing bark known as, “cinchona bark”. During his time, malaria was a serious disease. It was being treated with the medication, “quinine”.

He conducted experiments on himself by consuming daily a few grams of the bark for a couple of days. Soon he began to develop symptoms of malaria setting in. He was convinced and concluded that, a “medication” or “drug” will have to produce “similar symptoms of a disease” in a healthy individual which are “similar to the disease”. Thus, the maxim and the” principle of Similia Similibus Curentur” came to be.

In this manner of administrating the quinine containing bark, Dr. Samuel Hahnemann proved to himself that, a certain herbal drug or substance can work by the reason that such drug duplicates a body’s defense symptom and instinct to get rid of the disease.

Homeopathy Schools & Popularity

The earliest homeopathy school in the Unites States of America was founded in the 1800s. By the 1900s it became very popular. During this time, a number of severe diseases like, scarlet fever, yellow fever, typhoid and other ailments were treated with good successful results.

The history and growth of homeopathy has come a long way. It has made good gains among the public by the beginning of the 19th century. Today, the public show greater interest in holistic treatment and natural medicine.

Help Your Hair, Avoid Hair Loss

Posted by nisbinfo | Healthy Living | Thursday 5 March 2009 9:56 am

What is the normal cycle of hair growth and loss?

The normal cycle of hair growth lasts for 2 to 6 years. Each hair grows approximately 1 centimeter (less than half an inch) per month during this phase. About 90 percent of the hair on your scalp is growing at any one time. About 10 percent of the hair on your scalp, at any one time, is in a resting phase. After 2 to 3 months, the resting hair falls out and new hair starts to grow in its place.

Can improper care of my hair cause hair loss?

Yes. If you wear pigtails or cornrows or use tight hair rollers, the pull on your hair can cause a type of losing the hair called traction alopecia (say: al-oh-pee-sha). If the pulling is stopped before scarring of the scalp develops, your hair will grow back normally. However, scarring can cause permanent losing of their hair. Hot oil hair treatments or chemicals used in permanents (also called “perms”) may cause inflammation (swelling) of the hair follicle, which can result in scarring and losing their hair.

What is common baldness?

The term “common baldness” usually means male-pattern baldness, or permanent-pattern baldness. Male-pattern baldness is the most common cause of hair loss in men. Men who have this type of hair loss usually have inherited the trait. Men who start losing their hair at an early age tend to develop more extensive baldness. In male-pattern baldness, hair loss typically results in a receding hair line and baldness on the top of the head.

Women may develop female-pattern baldness. In this form of hair loss, the hair can become thin over the entire scalp.

It is normal to shed some hair each day as part of this cycle. However, some people may experience excessive (more than normal) hair loss. Losing Hair of this type can affect men, women and children.

There are no definitive studies to show that shampoos can actually result in regrowth of hair that is caused by what we all “permanent” conditions, largely the result of heredity and hormones. However, early prevention is important, and experimenting with shampoos during these early stages may provide invaluable help in reducing the rate of loss.
