Non-Medical Home Care – Recovering From Surgery
Having surgery can be difficult for anyone. Not only must you find the necessary time away from work and other obligations, but there may also be out of pocket costs involved, and you have to face the fear and pain associated with the surgery as well. After the surgery is over, post-operative care is one of the biggest challenges that a patient faces, and it is often overlooked.
Depending on your surgery, post-operative care may include bed rest, refrain from lifting, not spending too much time standing and avoiding automobile transportation among other restrictions. Fortunately as you heal the post-operative restrictions will be removed but many patients slow the healing progress, and even cause additional damage by not taking the proper post-operative precautions. The biggest reason for this is the patient trying to do “too much, too soon” after they return home because they don’t have adequate assistance.
Thankfully there are home care options, some companies offer in home nursing or physical therapy services while others offer non-medical home caregivers. Frequently by the time a patient is released from the hospital an in-home nurse is not necessary but they still need help with personal care and homemaking, so that they can get their much needed bed rest.
Non-medical home care providers can take care of almost anything that you need done around the house, as well as help take care of you after your surgery. Some companies will provide personal care, homemaking chores, cooking, transportation, and medication reminders.
When you initially contact a company for assistance they will need to conduct an assessment to determine what type of care plan would work best for you, and what costs will be involved. You can work with the home care provider to help them create a customized care plan that provides exactly what you need. You may be surprised at how affordable it is, especially compared to the cost of staying in a hospital or rehabilitation center. Most companies will look to see if they can use your insurance or see if you qualify for any assistance programs. Often you can get some or all of your home care paid for.
Remember, home care is not just for seniors. Short-term home care is a great solution for someone recovering from surgery. Being able to recover from surgery at home may actually help patients to recover faster, and it certainly makes everyone more comfortable. Home care assistance even makes it easier for friends and family to visit and help when they are able.
