Hearing Loss – Can it Be Treated Naturally?

Some Help for this Frustration Condition!

In this article, I’ll talk about the two supplements-one a herb and the other a mineral-that could help both treat and prevent hearing loss. We’re not talking about “tinnitus,” which is the condition that causes ringing in the ears. Instead, this is about losing hearing itself. The ears are amazing receptacles of sound. “Waves” of sound travel through the air and vibrate in your eardrums. The vibrations are sent to the inner ear, where there are tiny cells that actually move in response to the vibrations. It is this movement that generates an electrical signal that is sent down a nerve pathway to the brain. All of this, of course, happens instantly. Your brain translates these signals into something meaningful-music or words, for example-that have a certain volume or pitch to them. Now, there are many things that can disrupt this process and cause loss of hearing. Infections could strike the inner ear, the eardrum, the auditory nerve or even the brain, disrupting your ears’ ability to channel sound. Fluid can collect in the middle ear, or too much wax can block the outer ear. Your eardrum and hair cells can be damaged, the latter by loud noise. Some drugs, such as “quinine,” antibiotics and aspirin, may affect those hair cells. Many people experience simple age-related hearing loss. Three more causes are far more severe than the hearing loss that they might trigger: multiple sclerosis, brain tumors and stroke. For the purposes of this article, let’s focus on two hearing conditions exclusively.

Preventing Noise-induced Hearing Loss

The natural cure for stopping it before it happens is the mineral that seems to do so much for us: magnesium. People who should seriously consider taking magnesium supplements are those who are often exposed to piercing sounds. This could mean gunfire, live music or tools that are used in construction. Over the long term, loud noise can cause permanent hearing loss. This is the reason that prevention is so critical. Nobody knows exactly how the mineral works to protect the ear, but research has proved it. Nothing is as effective as wearing devices such as headphones, but magnesium will provide an extra layer of protection. In the mid-1990s, researchers performed a two-month study on 300 military recruits who were exposed daily to loud noises.27 They used a small dose 167 milligrams (mg) of magnesium-but even this was enough to raise the level of magnesium inside cells and protect the ears from damage. Soldiers taking magnesium were less likely to get permanent hearing damage, and if damage did set in, it was less severe. Fast-forward to 2004, when a study explored the protective effects of magnesium in 20 men. Magnesium was able to provide “significant” protection against hearing damage without any side effects. Researchers here called magnesium a “novel, biological, natural agent” for noise induced hearing damage.28 They also included one note: it may help treat hearing loss, as well. Now, on that note, I have a third study to report. In it, 28 patients who had sudden, noise-induced hearing loss were given steroids, placebo or magnesium supplements. Sure enough, far more people taking the mineral had improved hearing. This study confirms that magnesium may not just prevent noise-induced hearing loss, but help treat it, too.29

Treating Sudden Hearing Loss

The cause of sudden hearing loss is unknown, but circulation is believed to be part of the problem. That theory is the reason that ginkgo biloba is considered to be a herbal treatment, as it increases the body’s circulation. In 2001, researchers gave 106 patients ginkgo at either 120 mg two times a day or 12 mg two times a day.30 All of the patients had a specific form of sudden hearing loss. The low dose of ginkgo was chosen because they thought that it would serve as placebo and have no effect at all. Amazingly, though, they were wrong! It didn’t matter which dose the patients took, most of them recovered from the sudden hearing loss two months later. It is very interesting, but it doesn’t totally prove that ginkgo is effective, because it’s possible that many people with sudden hearing loss simply recover on their own anyway. However, a second study that year compared ginkgo to the drug “pentoxifylline” for treating sudden deafness in 72 patients. Both treatments proved to work equally effectively, although patients on ginkgo reported better improvement overall. In any event, the herb worked as well as the drug did. Speak to your doctor about magnesium and ginkgo if you have damaged hearing or believe that you are at risk.

Children Orthotics – Is it Necessary?

Posted by | Healthy Living | Thursday 24 June 2010 5:26 pm

Orthotics is the device used to alter or modify the function of the foot. They are designed to treat and adjust as well as support some of the foot disorders that are bio-mechanical in nature. These devices can be obtained over the counter while others can be custom made to meet the specific needs of a particular patient. Children orthotics is also available for children suffering from the various foot disorders.

Children begin to walk when they are between 8 and 18 months and most of them are flat footed at the start and achieve heel toe walking when they are about 6 or 7 years old and this is the time when the arch should be well developed and normal. The arch in children is normally lower since the heel bone is not completely developed. However there are some children who will not follow this trend as they will tend to remain flat-footed. These children with excessive probation should be taken to a podiatrist to be thoroughly examined to determine if the degree of pronation is normal or may lead to an abnormality.

Excessive arching is a cause of many problems associated with the feet, ankles and the leg. It may also result to night crams as well as the development of juvenile bunions in teenagers. Many children who are excessively pronated always complain of fatigue when they walk for a short distance. This condition is then take care of by use of children orthotics which is aimed supporting the unformed arch to ensure that the child’s foot is aligned in the proper way and that the bones will be fused to lead to the formation of an arch as the child grows.

Restoring foot alignment will not only help in the stabilization of the foot but also control the inner rotation of the various mechanisms of the foot to reduce discomfort and pain as well as support other parts of the foot such as tissues and ligaments. It is therefore essential for children with excessively pronated feet to have the orthotics at an early time to prevent the condition from being irretrievable. These devices are made from hard acrylic to facilitate the maximum functioning of the feet in various activities such as running and walking.

The prescription of these devices are quite expensive and some of the insurance companies are willing to cover the costs but others are not since the kids grow faster and this means that the devices will have to be replaced after a few years. The device is designed with a seated heel that is meant to force the heel into a straight alignment and thus it differs a lot from the adult- version. While looking for these devices, the parents should consider the needs of the child as well as their interest. Custom made ones are suitable for the athletic ones as they will improve the gait and running.

Salt and High Blood Pressure FAQs

Posted by | Healthy Living | Thursday 17 June 2010 5:31 pm

In a country where jumbo cheeseburgers and barbecue-flavor potato chips have become lunch staples, it is not surprising that one-fourth of the entire American population have been diagnosed with high blood pressure. These foods, along with the countless other processed takeaways and junk that we too commonly buy at our own convenience, have very high salt content, which is one of the causes of hypertension.

How much salt should I consume everyday?

The body only needs up to 2,300 mg of salt everyday. That is much less than the more than 3,000 mg that the average American takes in each day. If you have been diagnosed with high blood pressure, your salt intake should not be more than 1,500 mg everyday. Scientific studies have proven that increased amount of salt in the body also increases blood pressure and the risk for atherosclerosis, a condition where the blood vessels harden.

What does salt do to the body?

In just the right amounts, sodium, which is one of the two components of salt (The other is chlorine.), is healthy. It maintains the balance of fluids in the body, as well as help transmit nerve impulses and regulate the contraction and relaxation of the muscles. The kidneys control the amount of sodium present in the body. When the kidney detects an excess of sodium, they release it through sweat and urine.

What happens when the kidneys cannot excrete the salt?

If your kidneys are overwhelmed with too much salt, they may have a problem with processing the excess sodium and flushing it out of the body. The sodium, which then starts to move into the bloodstream, attracts water in the surrounding cells and tissues and deposits the water into the bloodstream. In turn, blood volume increases and the heart has to work harder to push the blood around the entire body, thus increasing blood pressure. If left untreated, this can lead to congestive heart failure or chronic kidney disease.

Is there a way for me to decrease risks of high blood pressure?

Absolutely. Cutting back on your salt intake is a very helpful way to reduce your risks of having high blood pressure. The best thing you can do is to minimize your intake of processed and prepared foods, as they contain at least 90% of your entire salt consumption in a day. It’s better to stock up on more natural and healthier sources of sodium, such as celery, dairy products, meat, and shellfish. Many of the condiments we use to add flavor to our dishes also belong to the list of salty culprits that endanger your body’s circulatory system. Chuck out the ketchup, soy sauce, mustard, salad dressing and dips and substitute them with lemon juice, lime juice, and fresh herbs to spice up your dishes. It also helps to check the labels on everything you buy at the supermarket. A ‘Low Sodium’ label on an item is recommended, as the food only contains 140 g of sodium or less. Keep in mind that foods labeled ‘Unsalted’ may still contain a considerable amount of sodium in them.

Being Aware of the Addiction of Pain Killers

Posted by | Healthy Living | Thursday 27 May 2010 5:01 pm

Nobody knows when a person gets addicted to painkillers. Everybody takes them to ease the pain related to diseases, fatigue after strenuous work or to overcome post surgery trauma. Still, for some people while they may have started using these medicines for valid reasons, the risk of addiction is always there.

This addiction, once it enters your life will overpower your other desires and ruin it forever. Since this addiction comes most silently, many people realize its bad consequences only when it is too late for them. These painkillers work on the principle of depressing the central nervous system and thus suppressing pain, so they become the first choice in managing pain.

Many painkillers use opium as a main ingredient, which when taken as a pill ceases any painful sensation in human body. In fact opium works on certain regions of the human brain that control the feeling of pleasure. This sometimes works as a great high for people in pain and thus makes them addicted to painkillers.

On experiencing the ill effects of painkillers when people desperately try to search for non-drug alternatives for pain relief, they usually face a much harder time in gaining access to them. So in desperation they turn towards painkillers which are easily available which fuels their addiction.

If any of your near and dear ones are prescribed with painkillers, then you should be very particular that the doses are to be taken only as prescribed. If disease treatment requires long term administration of painkillers then in consultation with physician, drug rotation needs to be done to avoid addiction to a particular drug. Similarly painkillers dosage must never be increased or decreased without doctor’s advice. As with any medicine, treatment with painkillers must never be abruptly discontinued on your own and the doctor’s advice must always prevail in such situations.

Due to prescription by a doctor, if a painkiller has been advised for certain duration, then that duration must strictly be adhered to. Exceeding that duration and taking that painkiller for a longer period could lead to addiction. Painkillers should be taken in tablet/ capsule form as they are available in market and should never be crushed. Crushing a large dose could be released in the human body leading to severely toxic effect. These drugs are manufactured in a certain way which ensures that they are to be released slowly in our system.

Precautions must always be taken to use a painkiller which has not been prescribed to you by a doctor. Painkillers purchased over the counter may turn out to be counterproductive as their effect varies from person to person according to his or her tolerance level and also due to the other drugs he or she may be using.
